Kratos’s next God of War links directly to Laufey’s story
The saga of Kratos and his legacy continues to unfold with Santa Monica Studio setting its sights on the next chapter of the God of War universe. Cory Barlog, head of creative at the studio, has confirmed that the next mainline installment in the series will follow God of War Laufey, directly connecting to the narrative world established in the recent game.
This exciting news was solidified during the God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where Barlog spoke about the studio’s vision for expanding the lore. He emphasized that everything done within the Faye story is designed to set up and expand what comes next, hinting at a vast world waiting to be explored.
“Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next,” Barlog explained. He highlighted that characters like Phranque have been woven into the fabric of this universe since the beginning, creating an exciting foundation for future adventures.
While specific details about the upcoming Kratos-led title—such as its title, platform, or setting—remain under wraps, the focus remains firmly on deepening the lore. Barlog made it clear that while exploring Faye is a journey, there will always be space for the legendary figurehead of the franchise.
“There’s always going to be Kratos games,” he asserted, backed by statements from the studio confirming their excitement about telling many more stories with him. Lawrence, another key voice, echoed this sentiment, underscoring the enduring appeal of Kratos’ story.
The initial reception to God of War Laufey was predictably mixed, with some fans praising the combat and visuals while others noted that fan-favorite Kratos was not center stage. Nevertheless, glimpses of the hero were present, showing him briefly interacting with Faye.
Beyond the direct sequel, Santa Monica Studio has also announced exciting developments for Kratos’ past, confirming plans for a remake of the God of War Greek trilogy. This project aims to bring Kratos back into the spotlight as the central figure across the series.
This dual focus—continuing the story forward while revisiting legendary history—ensures that the narrative thread remains strong. Fans can anticipate a future where Kratos continues his journey, whether exploring new realms or reinterpreting his epic past.
