The anticipation for magic and adventure reached a fever pitch at the recent D23 Disney fan convention, where the spotlight focused on one of Disney’s most beloved franchises: Kingdom Hearts. Following the main event, IGN brought viewers a special “DEEP DIVE into KINGDOM HEARTS” panel, offering an exclusive look behind the curtain of how these sprawling worlds are built and how the magic comes to life.

This wasn’t just a retrospective; it was a masterclass in creativity. The panel provided fans with a behind-the-scenes peek at the making of the games, pulling back the curtain on the creative minds, character voices, and the intricate process that shapes the Kingdom Hearts universe.

Joining the discussion were some of the industry’s biggest names. The lineup included Nana Gadd, director of games at the Walt Disney Company’s Japan branch; Tai Yasue from Square Enix; and the legendary Tetsuya Nomura himself. The panel was further enhanced by the presence of talented voice actors, including Haley Joel Osment, who brought Sora to life, David Gallagher, who voiced Riku, and Renée Johnson, who contributes to several iconic Disney character voices.

The excitement didn’t stop there. Earlier in the day, fans had already enjoyed tantalizing gameplay footage at the Honda Center showcase, witnessing Sora battling Heartless in Coco’s Land of the Dead. But the panel delivered bigger revelations about what’s next for the series and the upcoming installment, Kingdom Hearts IV.

During the session, an extended trailer focused on the ambitious concepts planned for the future. It offered a glimpse into Quadratum, revealing futuristic, flying vehicles and showcasing Sora engaging in new adventures with technology like smartphones before facing down Heartless. The footage also included segments of Mickey gameplay, hinting at two-dimensional, Link Between Worlds-style mechanics, as well as moments where players could seemingly control characters like Goofy and Donald.

The discussions delved into the philosophical core of the worlds themselves. Nomura admitted that when crafting new worlds, he prioritizes the overall gameplay experience above all else. This creative approach guided their vision for Kingdom Hearts IV. When considering how worlds should synergize with Sora’s narrative and thematic goals, the team found inspiration in the world of Coco.

This focus on thematic synergy led to some fascinating insights into world selection. Nomura revealed that they explored options like The Nightmare Before Christmas as an early “must-have” world for Kingdom Hearts 1, while Nana Gadd confirmed that The Little Mermaid was also among their first picks due to its beautiful underwater setting.

The promise of new content is already building. Following the D23 event, news about a Kingdom Hearts animated series, set to stream on Disney+, was also announced, bringing the magic to a new medium. Fans can look forward to more updates as the creative process continues to unfold.
