Marvel has no plan for Kit Harington’s return

For Kit Harington, the actor who brought the enigmatic Dane Whitman to life in the 2021 film Eternals, the future of the Black Knight remains an open, tantalizing question mark.
The seeds of this potential future were sown during the film’s post-credits scene, where Harington was seen handling the Ebony Blade—a powerful symbol hinting at a deeper, more complex narrative. In a moment that underscored the character’s internal struggle, Mahershala Ali’s character, Blade, reportedly questioned Harington about his readiness for the transformation into the Black Knight.
Despite the intriguing setup, the path to seeing the character fully realized has proven circuitous. While the broader scope of the MCU continues to evolve with massive events like Avengers: Doomsday and new X-Men introductions, concrete plans for a direct Black Knight appearance seem elusive.
Adding to the shifting landscape, the planned reboot of the Blade movie also did not materialize, further complicating the timeline for related storylines. When asked if there was any part of the lore he wished to explore further, he pointed toward the deep psychological resonance of the Ebony Blade storyline.
“I mean I’d love to,” Harington shared. “I don’t think there’s any plan to, but I think he’s a wicked character. There’s a part of him that, that whole Ebony Blade stuff where the more he kills, the more he gets, the more addicted. I think he’s such a great parable of addiction. I think he’s someone who starts good, goes bad, and I think it’s great. But we’ll see; I don’t know if there’s any plan.”
This emphasis on addiction and moral decline provides a rich foundation for the character, suggesting that the story lies not just in superhero battles, but in the intricate, often darker, psychological landscape of its protagonist. While the grand MCU narrative presses forward, Harington remains engaged in other exciting projects. He is currently immersed in the second season of the HBO Harry Potter series, taking on the role of Gilderoy Lockhart, demonstrating his versatility as he navigates another world of fantasy.
