While the Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently buzzing with massive tentpole films like X-Men, Ghost Rider, and Black Panther 3, a quieter, yet equally explosive, project is brewing in the background: the film adaptation of Nova.
This upcoming cinematic venture focuses on Nova Centurion Richard Rider, a character whose story is steeped in the high-stakes history of the cosmic landscape. Though the release date remains elusive, the groundwork has been laid by screenwriter Michael Waldron, who has dropped tantalizing hints about the narrative, hinting at the profound consequences of the events that shaped the universe.
In the comics, the Nova character inherits the mantle of Nova Centurion after the demise of the last surviving member of the planet Xandar’s elite Nova Corps. This Corps, however, was wiped out in the MCU before the events of Avengers: Infinity War, and Waldron suggests the film must grapple with the aftermath of this destruction. “They would have to reckon with that,” he noted, emphasizing the need to address this cosmic fallout within the narrative.
Waldron envisions a story that expands the cosmic scope of the MCU, drawing inspiration from beloved comic runs like Annihilation. The central creative challenge, Waldron mused, lies in establishing the starting point for such an expansive saga: should the story begin on Earth or in the vast expanse of space as part of the Nova Corps? He clearly believes the choice will define the impact of the story.
Despite the lack of an official release schedule, confirmation from Marvel himself suggests that the Nova story is still actively in development. Kevin Feige has confirmed that Nova is slated to be a feature film, not a television series, likely to be seen around the time of San Diego Comic-Con 2026.
Waldron, a writer who has become a trusted voice for Marvel Studios—having co-created Loki and penned Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and co-wrote Avengers: Doomsday—is perfectly positioned to deliver this ambitious cosmic epic.
