In the desolate world of the Metro, survival isn’t just about finding shelter; it’s about navigating a perilous economy. For the survivors living beneath the irradiated ruins of Moscow, the trade of power is codified in the shells they carry. Military-grade ammunition, specifically the MGR 5.45x39mm rounds, has long served as a fascinating, high-stakes form of currency.

This system forces a difficult choice upon every survivor: the MGR ammo is a potent alternative to standard rounds, yet every ejection during combat is a direct cost—literally shooting your hard-earned resources away. In a setting defined by constant threats, currency has become king, offering a tangible measure of power and survival.

The decision to bring this unique economic system back into the fold for Metro 2039 was not taken lightly. Executive producer Jon Bloch explained that the choice was simple: “That is the currency of the Metro, so how could we go back to the Metro without having the currency come back as well?”

While the concept of ammo-as-currency was a prominent feature in earlier installments like Metro 2033 and Last Light, it was ultimately removed from Metro Exodus. The reason was rooted in lore consistency; the scope of Exodus took the narrative beyond the confines of the Metro system, raising questions about where such a currency would exist in the wider wasteland.

However, the developers listened to player feedback regarding resource scarcity. The team recognized the benefit of integrating this trading mechanism with other survival tools. Instead of removing the economic concept, they chose to intertwine it with the crafting and upgrading systems introduced in Exodus, creating a layered approach to interaction with the world.

Players can still engage in vital survival activities, gathering resources from mutants and crafting rudimentary necessities like medkits and gas mask filters from their backpacks. Workbenches scattered across the irradiated wasteland offer more than just basic crafting; they are hubs for advanced survival mechanics. Here, players can clean weapons to prevent jams, choose between protective suits, and upgrade crucial components, such as strengthening gas mask visors or expanding backpack batteries.

A major addition in 2039 is the introduction of Blueprints, allowing survivors to craft significantly larger and more powerful equipment and weapon upgrades once they discover them. This amplifies the impetus for exploration, driving players to carefully investigate environments to find not only MGR ammunition for trade with outposts but also the materials needed to craft essential gear in the field.

By combining the MGR trade system with resource gathering from mutants, the game achieves a solution that integrates the best elements of both previous experiences. This holistic approach ensures that players are constantly motivated to explore, collect, and prepare, making every resource and every bullet count in the brutal journey back into the darkness of the Metro.
