Miami-Dade to Vice City GTA 6 plan causes sheriff backlash
Even before the highly anticipated release of GTA 6, the fictional world of Vice City has sparked a real-life debate in Miami-Dade County. Reports surfaced that county officials and law enforcement figures have strongly opposed a proposed marketing deal that would transform public spaces into crime-centric attractions.
The idea, put forward by some to turn locations like the Miami International Airport and Metrorail stations into Vice City landmarks, quickly ran into resistance. While conversations with Rockstar Games about potential opportunities had reportedly taken place, no formal agreement has been made or approved.
The opposition came from key figures, including Republican Miami-Dade County Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez and Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz. They argued that promoting a fictional world defined by crime and violence does not reflect the true character of the community they work to serve.
Commissioner Bermudez expressed concern that the focus should remain on promoting the real Miami-Dade they have built, rather than a fictional version defined by chaos. He argued that glorifying criminal themes is nonsensical, particularly when public safety is the focus.
Sheriff Cordero-Stutz echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the critical role of law enforcement. She pointed out that during a time when deputies are focused on reducing violent crime, preventing robberies, and strengthening community ties, promoting a fictional identity centered on those same crimes sends a confusing and inappropriate message.
The concerns deepened when the issue touched upon the sanctity of the justice system. A letter was shared requesting that all Miami-Dade County courthouses and court-related facilities be expressly excluded from any potential marketing, branding, or promotion related to GTA 6.
The request highlighted a fundamental distinction: these facilities are places where real people seek justice, face consequences, and carry out their constitutional duties. As one official noted, the individuals within these spaces are not characters in a fictional world; they are real people dealing with real, often tragic, consequences.
This focus on the gravity of real-world consequences underscores why the public, and county leadership, sought to draw a clear line between entertainment and the serious business of law and order. As the marketing for GTA 6 continues to build momentum, the conversation about where fiction ends and real-life integrity begins remains a compelling local story.
