Microsoft closes Hellblade Dev Ninja theory after failed buyout talks
In the ongoing restructuring of the gaming landscape, Microsoft has confirmed significant studio changes, signaling a shift in the direction of Xbox game development. As part of a broader initiative involving job losses, the company has announced plans to shutter the Hellblade studio, home to the critically acclaimed team Ninja Theory.
This decision comes amidst speculation about the future of creative teams within the industry. Prior to the announcement, there were murmurs that the British creative group had already secured a new home, perhaps finding a buyer, much like the team behind State of Decay 3, which was rumored to be involved in an acquisition. However, those hopes proved to be unfounded.
The reality of the situation proved more complex than anticipated. An update from Xbox executive Matt Booty clarified the studio’s future, revealing that discussions with two separate companies surrounding a potential acquisition had ultimately failed to materialize.
The closure of the studio represents a significant pivot for the team and the game, raising questions about the path forward for their creative talent and the intellectual property they have developed.
