Microsoft shakes up Xbox by buying Activision
The gaming world is currently buzzing with massive shifts, as Microsoft executes one of the most significant restructures in the history of its gaming business. The changes are not just internal; they are reshaping the landscape of major franchises and studio ownership, sending ripples through the industry.
In a move aimed at streamlining operations and doubling down on core franchises, Microsoft has announced substantial layoffs across its Xbox ecosystem. These cuts included 268 positions across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and XGS management, reflecting a broader effort to refocus the business under new leadership.
At the heart of this shake-up is the fate of the iconic Halo franchise. In a dramatic move, Halo Studios has been handed over to its creator, Activision. This means that the next mainline Halo game will be developed by Activision, led by a new, purpose-built team separate from the ongoing development and plans for Call of Duty.
This transition is part of a larger strategic ‘reset’ initiated by new Xbox boss Asha Sharma. This restructuring follows previous cuts and is designed to refocus Microsoft’s efforts toward its ambitious goal of reaching a billion players each day by 2030, driven by strengthening key properties like Halo, Minecraft, and Fallout.
The move also extends beyond Halo. Xbox has integrated developers of popular titles like World’s Edge and Sea of Thieves, including Rare, into the Activision umbrella. President Rob Kostich expressed enthusiasm for bringing these legendary teams into the fold, emphasizing the honor and responsibility of the new arrangement.
The legacy of Halo has been complex, evolving through multiple studios, including 343 Industries, which managed titles like Halo 4 and Halo Infinite. The recent changes signal a fresh chapter, asking whether Activision can honor the franchise’s legacy while forging a new path.
The corporate realignment is not just about one franchise; it involves a wider consolidation. Other major moves include the integration of Obsidian, the studio behind Grounded and The Outer Worlds, into the Bethesda family, and various other developer acquisitions and consultations, signaling a period of intense creative re-organization across the entire gaming industry.
As Microsoft moves forward, the focus remains on supporting the affected teams and fostering an environment that celebrates the incredible work that has shaped the gaming experience for millions of fans.
