MTG Commander decks return to online retail after shortages
The Commander Adventure is Back: Finding Gold in the MTG Foundations Market
Magic: The Gathering fans, prepare your wallets, because the legendary Foundations Commander decks have finally returned to major online retailers, including Amazon! After a period of scarcity following their initial release alongside Reality Fracture, these five foundational decks are now available, offering an accessible and exciting entry point into the deep, sprawling world of Commander.
Launched on October 2, 2026, these decks provided players with a perfect starting point to explore the most popular multiplayer format in Magic: The Gathering. Each deck offers a distinct mono-color strategy, built around familiar creature types or playstyles—think Angels and Dragons, Dinosaurs, Zombies, and artifacts—making them ideal for new players eager to dive in.
The Price of Precon Magic
While the excitement is high, the market has shown some real tenacity. Despite an original Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $30 per deck, prices have crept upward due to months of intermittent stock shortages for preorders and launch inventory. This meant that the quest for the perfect deal became a new adventure.
However, savvy shoppers are finding some genuinely sweet spots. By comparing current market rates on platforms like TCGplayer against retail prices, some decks are offering incredible value. For example, the mono-red deck, Reign of Dragons, is currently available on Amazon for $35.44, which is significantly below the average market price of $47.68.
The quest for the absolute best bargain leads to some fantastic finds. The mono-white Angels deck, Calling All Angels, is back in stock at the MSRP of $29.99, placing it $22 below its current market average of $52. This is easily the best deal available!
Even the artifact-heavy mono-blue deck, Keen Engineering, is priced at $43.07. Interestingly, this deck is poised to drop soon; its current market value is $30.26, suggesting a swift price correction is on the horizon.
Which Deck is Hiding the Best Deal?
The overall average for the five-deck bundle is currently running around $195, which is over $45 above the initial MSRP of $149.95. While the average per deck comes out to about $39, the smart move remains to focus on buying the single decks or patiently waiting for future reprints to bring prices down closer to the intended $30 mark.
One deck, however, is holding the spotlight for the greatest potential savings. The mono-green deck, Tramplesaurus Rex, remains out of stock. As a result, its price has been buoyed by reprints of cards like Surrak and Goreclaw, pushing its secondary market price up to $60. While it promises epic dinosaur warfare, paying double the standard rate for it isn’t the most wallet-friendly option right now.
Wizards of the Coast has hinted that these Foundations decks will see regular reprints, which should ease the burden for players looking to jump into the format. Keep an eye out for those reprints, as they promise to bring all these decks, including the mighty Tramplesaurus Rex, back down to more reasonable prices!
