In 2014, President Barack Obama awarded Carpenter the Medal of Honor for his valor. The President described the scene, noting that Carpenter was found lying face down over the blast area, his gear melted, and his body ravaged by the explosion. His recovery was a monumental effort, involving brain surgery to remove shrapnel and over forty subsequent operations to address injuries like a collapsed lung and multiple fractured limbs. Today, he lives with the physical and emotional scars of that day, living with a prosthetic eye, a new jaw, and new teeth.
