Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Brings Back Extraction with New Early Access Experience

Get ready to dive into the action, because Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is bringing back one of its most beloved modes, the Extraction Shooter, and it’s doing so with a fresh, expanded approach. Activision and Infinity Ward have unveiled exciting details regarding the revamped DMZ mode, offering pre-order players an exclusive early access experience ahead of the full launch.

This new access comes bundled with the campaign early access, allowing players to jump into the story sooner. Eligible players who pre-ordered either the standard or Vault Edition of the game across PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S will gain access to these early opportunities. The timeline is set for excitement: campaign early access kicks off on Friday, October 16, followed by DMZ early access on Tuesday, October 20. The full launch, unleashing the entire experience, is scheduled for Friday, October 23.

The DMZ mode has a history within the franchise, having first introduced Call of Duty’s take on the extraction shooter experience with Modern Warfare 2. While the mode saw expansion and subsequent support ended in late 2023, the developers are now taking another swing to redefine it. They are not just reviving a feature; they are evolving it into something truly definitive.

Infinity Ward has positioned the new DMZ in Modern Warfare 4 as the series’ “definitive extraction shooter experience.” This update focuses on persistent progression within the open-world combat environment known as the Hajin Exclusion Zone, promising a deeper level of engagement beyond the previous iteration.

The vision behind this evolution stems from the beta testing phase, where the team learned a great deal about what players enjoy. As one studio multiplayer creative director noted, the experience was refined through trial and error. “There’s an interesting story with the DMZ beta, where we had to make some decisions,” he said. “We learned that we made a very approachable, fun sandbox that was fun to fight in, to explore, to make friends in, to get into fights in. There’s a bunch of stuff we left on the table, so as soon as we finished with the last game, we were just gung-ho on, ‘OK, we know what we want to do.'”

This focus on making the mode a genuinely fun and flexible sandbox suggests that the new iteration of DMZ will offer rich gameplay opportunities, balancing intense extraction mechanics with open-world exploration. While the core multiplayer offerings will wait until the full release date on October 23, the focus on these early access modes promises a substantial and engaging experience for fans eager to explore the new combat landscape.
