New Leadership for the XBOX Division

New Leaders Step Up to Redefine the Future of Gaming Experiences

The world of gaming and entertainment is buzzing with fresh leadership appointments designed to push the boundaries of what players experience beyond the screen. In a recent announcement, key figures have been placed at the helm of new divisions and core leadership roles, signaling a major strategic shift focused on deepening the connection between franchises and their communities.

These changes are rooted in a larger vision centered on the principles of Creator and Connection. To execute this vision, the organization has appointed two dynamic leaders to spearhead initiatives focused on expanding the scope of the XBOX brand and the Mojang ecosystem.

Kayleen Walters is taking on the role of President of XP, a newly established XBOX division dedicated to exploring how people experience franchises outside of gameplay. This initiative seeks to formalize the realm of entertainment surrounding the games, focusing on four core investment areas: XBOX PICTURES for film and television, XBOX PRODUCTS for licensing, XBOX PARTNERSHIPS for brand alliances, and XBOX PLACES for location-based events and experiences.

Bringing a wealth of experience in building massive entertainment franchises, Walters previously spent thirteen years at Lucasfilm guiding Star Wars across various media. Her background also includes helping grow the Minecraft product into a multibillion-dollar business, serving as Executive Producer for A Minecraft Movie, and producing its sequel.

This focus on experience aligns perfectly with the goal of making the stories behind the games resonate even more deeply with audiences. Walters’ expertise lies in creating immersive worlds, ensuring that the magic of a franchise is amplified across every touchpoint, from merchandise to major cinematic adaptations.

Meanwhile, Maria Angelidou-Smith joins XBOX as the CEO of Mojang and Minecraft, bringing unparalleled expertise in community scale and digital product development. Angelidou-Smith has a distinguished track record building products used by billions, having led product and technology organizations at Meta, Reddit, and other major platforms.

Her experience overseeing massive communities—including leading Facebook Groups for over 1.8 billion people and serving as Chief Product Officer at Reddit—provides a deep understanding of how creators, technology, and monetization intersect. This background positions her perfectly to focus on the massive, creative community that surrounds Minecraft.

Angelidou-Smith’s immediate priority will be listening to and learning from the teams and communities who know Minecraft best, ensuring that the evolution of the platform respects its foundational spirit while embracing new avenues for growth and connection.

These appointments represent a powerful synergy: a drive to build expansive, tangible experiences (XP) supported by a profound understanding of massive digital communities (Mojang). The combined leadership promises to take the beloved worlds of gaming and create an even richer, more meaningful tapestry for everyone who loves them.
