Ninja Theory deal falls apart

The gaming world is currently navigating a choppy waters as major corporate shifts continue to ripple through the industry, and the cuts are landing squarely on acclaimed creative teams. One of the most recent developments involves the proposed closure of the celebrated Hellblade studio, Ninja Theory, following ongoing restructuring efforts at Xbox.

Xbox’s chief content officer, Matt Booty, recently announced that the studio will proceed with the proposed closure. This decision follows the failure of two separate agreements, prompting the company to initiate consultation with employees regarding the closure while simultaneously exploring alternative future paths.

Ninja Theory has left a significant mark on interactive storytelling. Since its founding in 2000, the studio has developed a diverse catalog of titles, including classics like Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, DmC: Devil May Cry, and Bleeding Edge. Most recently, the studio gained widespread recognition for the Hellblade series, with Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 launching in 2024. The future of this franchise, including planned follow-up entries, now hangs in the balance.

While Booty indicated the possibility of “other paths forward,” the reality suggests the likelihood of the studio shutting down unless a new buyer emerges. This move is happening amidst a wider corporate reset at Xbox, which is aggressively restructuring its subsidiaries.

This period of internal change extends beyond studio closures. Xbox is shaking up its portfolio by shifting creative ownership, with Activision set to develop the next Halo title, and major studios like Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios merging. Furthermore, Obsidian is moving under the umbrella of Bethesda Game Studios.

The fallout from this internal strategy has resulted in significant personnel changes. Following previous layoffs that reduced the workforce by 1,600 employees in July, Microsoft has continued its focus on streamlining operations, cutting at least 268 staff.

The process of closing the Ninja Theory studio is being handled with a necessary legal caution. The announcement suggests a commitment to consultation with employees, which aligns with legal requirements in the UK, ensuring that affected staff are given the necessary time to explore new employment opportunities while redundancy measures are discussed.
