Nintendo Cancels Zelda Game Starring Ganondorf
For fans of The Legend of Zelda, the anticipation for new adventures is always high. Yet, behind the curtain of exciting new titles, there was a fascinating, high-stakes development story involving the franchise’s iconic villain. What began as an ambitious project under the umbrella of a massive publisher quickly became a tale of creative divergence and independent ambition.
Reports emerged in September 2024 that Ubisoft Milan was actively working on a Zelda spin-off, internally codenamed Goliath. Early plans suggested a bold direction, with the infamous Ganondorf slated to become the new playable protagonist. This spin-off was intended to be a unique departure from the established Zelda formula, promising something fresh for the genre.
However, the path diverged quickly. Nintendo ultimately decided to reject the prototype back in late 2023, signaling a major pivot for the project. This decision led the development team to seek a new home, opting to leave Ubisoft and establish their own studio: Day 4 Night.
This move wasn’t just a change of address; it was a declaration of independence. The team, including figures like Davide Soliani, who had previously directed successful titles such as the Mario + Rabbids games, channeled their creative energy into developing their own IP. Currently, Day 4 Night is focusing on a new title titled Bradley the Badger.
While the spin-off saga concluded in one studio, the larger corporate maneuvering didn’t stop there. Ubisoft attempted to redirect Nintendo’s interest by pitching other intellectual properties, including Star Fox and Mario. Despite these efforts, the original vision for the Zelda spin-off proved to be a dead end, underscoring the unique and sometimes unpredictable nature of large-scale franchise development.
This outcome is not unique. History shows that spin-off projects can face unexpected cancellations; for instance, Retro Studios’ Project X was reportedly shelved during the Wii’s lifespan, demonstrating that creative choices often take unexpected turns.
Despite these shifts, the journey for Zelda fans continues, and the promise of the series remains strong. We won’t have to wait long for the next major evolution. The upcoming remake of Ocarina of Time for the Switch 2 is slated for release in November 2024, offering a whole new generation the chance to experience what many consider to be the greatest game in the entire series.
