Nintendo staff played Animal Crossing daily before launch by Iwata
Sometimes, the most successful products aren’t driven by marketing budgets or revolutionary technology, but by a simple, heartfelt mandate from the very top. In the world of gaming, this idea was powerfully demonstrated by Satoru Iwata, the former CEO of Nintendo, who apparently knew exactly how to inspire his team—and his world—to embrace a certain digital charm.
Long before Animal Crossing: New Leaf became a beloved phenomenon, there was a peculiar behind-the-scenes initiative designed to ensure that the game wasn’t just released, but truly understood. A former Nintendo UK PR and social media manager, Ashley Day, recalls this unique push in a retrospective on the Nintendo DS era.
“There was a very unusual push behind the scenes to make Animal Crossing: New Leaf a success,” Day recounted. He noted that this wasn’t standard practice for a game giant; employees weren’t just given freebies, they were given access months before the official release.
This extraordinary attention was driven by a desire to instill a deeper appreciation for the game’s unique rhythm and charm. Iwata reportedly wanted every employee at Nintendo Europe and its subsidiaries to experience the world of Animal Crossing firsthand.
“He made a point and said, ‘I want everyone, it’s now your job to play New Leaf, like play it every day,'” Day explained. The goal was clear: to ensure that people understood what it felt like to play Animal Crossing habitually, giving them an authentic perspective.
This unusual directive had a palpable effect. While the rest of the industry moved forward, Nintendo‘s European operations transformed into a vibrant community of Animal Crossing aficionados. The daily routines of employees were punctuated by the delightful simplicity of the island life.
The cultural shift was even amusing. Day remembers watching older sales staff, some in their late fifties who weren’t typically immersed in gaming, suddenly become ultra-obsessed with the game. These employees were reportedly trading on the Animal Crossing stock market and even making clothes!
It is hard to argue that this top-down approach contributed to the game’s enormous success. Whether it was intentional or simply a brilliant act of leadership, having the entire organization behind the experience undoubtedly made New Leaf a benchmark for the franchise, solidifying its place as a fan favorite to this day.
