It’s October in the Midwest, a time often associated with crisp air and cozy sweaters, but for some, it signals the arrival of a very specific kind of excitement: the resurgence of the pinball world. Once relegated to the sidelines, the pinball industry has roared back, and the epicenter of this thrilling revival is currently descending upon a convention center in Chicagoland for the annual Pinball Expo.

This recent explosion in popularity has drawn enthusiasts and industry observers alike to the heart of the manufacturing process, moving the conversation beyond just the games themselves and into the very mechanics of how they are made. I spent time exploring one of Chicago’s last old-school manufacturers before diving into the cutting edge of the silver-ball universe.

The story of this comeback is best told behind the scenes at Stern Pinball’s headquarters in Elk Grove, Illinois. On a brisk fall Friday morning, hundreds of attendees gathered outside the facility, eager to enter a factory where raw parts transform into licensed, coveted creations. This was a fascinating spectacle—watching the machinery that feeds the entertainment world in action.

The tour began by stepping into the lobby, where the sheer number of machines lining the walls immediately set a tone of awe. We were soon greeted by Gary Stern, who shared insights into the company’s impressive 40-year history.

The real magic, however, happened when we reached the factory floor. The atmosphere shifted as we moved deeper, where the process of turning raw materials into iconic game designs unfolded before our eyes. Stern employee and legendary game designer George Gomez joined us, guiding the group through the operation and answering questions about the industry’s vast landscape.

Gomez offered a powerful perspective on the company’s dominance, highlighting the massive scale of the industry. He noted that at any given time, Stern controls 90 percent of the current pinball market, leaving the rest to the competition.

The Pinball Expo serves as a perfect showcase for this dynamic market, bringing together the past, present, and future of pinball design and manufacturing. It is a testament to how a niche passion can evolve into a thriving, creatively rich, and highly competitive sector, driven by innovation and a deep appreciation for a classic game.
