Pokémon targets smart device integration
Pokémon CEO Eyes Wearable Tech Integration at PokémonXP
At the inaugural PokémonXP in San Francisco, the future of gaming and technology took center stage, and at the heart of the discussion was the evolving relationship between Pokémon and wearable technology. Tsunekazu Ishihara, President and CEO of The Pokémon Company, shared some intriguing insights into how the franchise might integrate with the latest advancements in smart gadgets.
Ishihara reflected on the journey Pokémon has taken, noting how the franchise has naturally adapted alongside major technological shifts in handheld gaming and wireless connectivity. He pointed out that when early gadgets like the Pokéwalker or PokémonGO Plus first appeared, they felt like exciting “secret weapons” for players. Today, however, the conversation is shifting toward deeper integration.
“Going forward, I was thinking, maybe a challenge for us is figuring out how we can integrate Pokémon more with some of the wearable technology, like smart watches, smart glasses, or even smart rings, for example,” Ishihara stated. This vision signals a move beyond simple accessories and toward immersive, personal experiences where Pokémon can be woven into daily life.
This forward-looking statement followed a highly anticipated reveal of the Fitbit Air Special Edition Pokémon Sleep, a wearable health tracker that connects directly to Pokémon Sleep, a feature that gamifies the experience of rest.
Ishihara, who has a deep history with the franchise, bringing expertise from his time leading Creatures Inc. and co-owning the Pokémon franchise alongside Nintendo and Game Freak, views this technological evolution as a natural progression. He expressed a deep hope for the future of the brand, wishing that the creators continue to forge entirely new forms of play that captivate people and bring enjoyment across generations.
The underlying message is clear: the potential lies not just in the games themselves, but in how Pokémon can interact with the world around us through advanced technology. It suggests an exciting frontier where digital exploration meets physical wellness, promising new dimensions for fans to engage with their favorite creatures.
