PS begs for transparent Xbox anniversary controllers
PlayStation Brings Back the Magic: DualSense and PS5 Get a Retro-Futuristic Makeover
Gaming hardware is evolving, and this time, the revolution is seeing light. PlayStation has announced the arrival of the Prism collection, a new range of DualSense controller colorways and PS5 console faceplates that embrace the vibrant, transparent aesthetic of the late 1990s.
This move taps into a growing trend in gaming technology that loves a touch of nostalgic flair. By introducing these colorful, translucent designs, Sony is allowing players to inject personality into their setups, offering a fresh, stylish twist on the familiar PS5 experience.
The design team behind the collection is clearly aiming for a blend of history and modernity. Leo Cardoso, from PlayStation’s Color, Material, and Finish design team, explained the inspiration behind the look: “We wanted to bring back the iconic see-through trend of the late ’90s in a fresh, modern way that complements the PS5’s industrial design.”
The new collection comes in three striking colors: Graphite Gray, Flare Orange, and Emerald Green, giving users a choice to stylize their gaming setup with colorful translucence.
The attention to detail extends to the console itself. The faceplates feature a high-gloss clear finish that showcases the technology within while maintaining a sleek appearance. “The high-gloss clear finish extends across the back of the controller, offering a look at the technology that powers the DualSense controller while maintaining a sleek, monochromatic look,” noted Satoshi Aoyagi, also part of the design team.
The design also includes a touch of playful irony. The transparent panelling on the console ends halfway down the machine, intentionally obscuring the Blu-ray drive. This choice is amusing, especially given the current focus on eliminating physical media on PlayStation platforms. While physical media was fundamental to the 90s tech era the collection references, the modern context of digital-first gaming makes this nod to physical media history all the more amusing.
These limited edition items will be available for pre-order starting on November 10, 2026, with the actual products scheduled to ship on February 4, 2027. The pricing reflects their premium design: the DualSense items will be $84.99 / £74.99, and the faceplates will be $74.99 / £64.99.
