PS5 visuals upgrade with AI upscaling

For years, gamers have been yearning for the visual fidelity seen on the PlayStation 5 Pro. With the launch of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), the question became: could this cutting-edge image quality be brought to the standard PS5? The answer, after extensive development, is a resounding yes.

Enter Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new evolution of AI upscaling that promises to redefine visual experiences on the PS5. Born from the collaborative efforts of Project Amethyst—a partnership with AMD—QSSR harnesses sophisticated artificial intelligence to analyze game images pixel by pixel, delivering upscaling with unparalleled detail and stability.

While PSSR currently sets the gold standard on the PS5 Pro, QSSR is engineered to bring those groundbreaking visual benefits to the PS5 console. This achievement is made possible through two key innovations: a streamlined neural network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation designed specifically to maximize performance on the PS5.

The immediate impact is visible in highly anticipated titles. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are among the first games to adopt this innovative library, offering players a noticeable upgrade in image clarity and stability.

Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions are eager to share how this technology elevates their worlds. Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games, noted that QSSR brings added clarity and stability, noting how it enhances environments like the busy streets of Madripoor and the dense alleyways of Shinjuku in Marvel’s Wolverine. He expressed excitement that this technology provides a “great taste of the PS5 Pro experience” to players on the PS5.

Similarly, Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, highlighted the benefits for Ghost of Yōtei players. She explained that QSSR excels at resolving fine details in characters and environments, offering a level of temporal stability previously unavailable on the PS5, moving closer to the visual excellence provided by PSSR.

This advancement isn’t just about sharper graphics; it’s about creating more immersive and stable worlds. The technology is designed to enhance the visual storytelling, ensuring that every detail, from character expressions to environmental textures, is rendered with greater precision.

The goal is clear: to push the boundaries of what is possible for PlayStation developers. QSSR is poised to become a standard, offering broad access to AI-guided upscaling improvements across the entire PlayStation ecosystem, promising even more stunning visuals in titles to come.
