PSN Hackers pose as kids to join PlayStation Network Sony investigates
A serious security concern is currently underway on the PlayStation Network, as users report that unauthorized individuals are successfully gaining access to their accounts by adding themselves as “child family members.” This development has triggered an investigation by Sony into a potentially exploitable vulnerability within the PlayStation Family management system.
The issue stems from hackers managing to bypass standard security protocols, including passwords and two-factor authentication, to establish these unauthorized family links. Once established, these rogue accounts, masquerading as children, are not just accessing the network—they possess capabilities that pose a significant risk to user privacy and finances.
The most concerning aspect of this security loophole is the potential access these child accounts gain. Depending on the parental controls enabled by the user, these unauthorized accounts could be able to play games and, far more worryingly, make purchases from the PlayStation Store using linked payment methods. This capability elevates the risk from simple account intrusion to potential financial fraud.
Beyond financial exposure, users have expressed deep concern that these unauthorized family members could view sensitive account information and personal details, including full names, making privacy a major vulnerability in this scenario.
Adding to the frustration for affected users is the systemic difficulty in resolving the situation. While the security breach is severe, Sony’s own family management settings present a baffling restriction: child members cannot be removed from a family group. Only adult members can be removed, and transforming a child account into an adult member requires an eligibility upgrade based on birth date, a process that seems entirely unsuited to swiftly mitigating a hack.
This policy roadblock has left users stranded, highlighting a stark conflict between a severe security threat and the platform’s internal management tools. While some users found limited success in restricting purchases, the ability to fully sever the connection with the unauthorized family member remains elusive.
As Sony works to address this critical flaw, the immediate advice for all PlayStation users is to maintain high vigilance. Review account settings immediately to identify any unrecognized family members, ensure two-factor authentication remains robust, and promptly contact PlayStation Support to report any suspicious activity and request the removal of unauthorized access.
