When diving into a game like Arc Raiders, you enter a space defined by intense uncertainty. It’s a world where the chaos of the environment is only amplified by the potential for unpredictable behavior from other players. But what happens when the safety mechanisms designed for one mode are exploited by others?

The reality of the PvP lobbies, however, has often been anything but safe. Reports suggest that players are actively leveraging the relative safety of the mode to engage in disruptive tactics. This includes manipulating the artificial intelligence, using specific abilities to intentionally push opponents into danger, or simply obstructing others.

Some of the tactics have been particularly egregious. We’ve seen reports of players using abilities like Bull Rush to deliberately bash opponents into arcs, resulting in them taking damage from enemies and being lootable without consequence. This behavior adds a layer of rat-like opportunism to the gameplay experience.

Beyond direct combat, the disruption extends to resource management. Players have reportedly camped locked loot rooms, waiting for another person to inadvertently unlock them. This creates a frustrating bottleneck, forcing players to choose between competing or waiting for random finds.

The mischief doesn’t stop there. Some players have utilized lure grenades to draw enemy robots into extraction points, a devastating move especially when targeting high-value assets like the shredder. This sort of deliberate manipulation of the game space creates an atmosphere ripe with conflict.

This behavior raises a significant question about intent. Is this merely selfish behavior aimed at accumulating wealth at the expense of others, or are these actions rooted in a desire to experience a particular mode, which remains experimental or shelved in the current development cycle?

The context of the game’s development adds another layer of complexity. Arc Raiders’ biggest update, which introduced features like grappling hooks and a new map, sparked a major resurgence in player numbers. This success has brought scrutiny to what constitutes acceptable PvP behavior in the community, recalling previous incidents where players went viral for relentlessly targeting casual newcomers.

While the developers are working to balance the experience, the idea of introducing a dedicated PvE mode remains an open consideration. The question is whether shifting focus to cooperative gameplay could offer a more positive and less fraught environment for all players.

Meanwhile, the broader industry is also exploring alternative modes. Bungie has announced plans to introduce PvE modes into Marathon, signaling a shift in how developers approach the extraction shooter genre and acknowledging that extraction gameplay can occupy a niche.
