Dual Analog Controller Review: The DualShock's Forgotten Forerunner

6/10 — Sony Dual Analog Controller
Works with: PlayStation, PS2
Pros
- First PlayStation pad with twin analogue sticks
- Longer grips than the original controller
- Collectible
Cons
- No rumble outside Japan
- Quickly replaced by the DualShock
The Dual Analog Controller, launched in 1997, was Sony’s first controller with twin analogue sticks. It was replaced within a year by the DualShock, making it something of a forgotten curiosity.
Design and features
It has longer grips than the original controller and two analogue sticks, plus a mode switch for analogue play. The Japanese version included rumble, but it was removed from most other releases. When the DualShock arrived, adding rumble and slightly refined sticks, the Dual Analog was quickly phased out.
Verdict
The Dual Analog Controller is an interesting piece of PlayStation history, but the DualShock does everything it does and more. It’s mainly one for collectors.
