DualShock 2 Review: The PS2's Unsung Workhorse

7.5/10 — Sony DualShock 2 Analog Controller
Works with: PS2, PlayStation
Pros
- Classic, comfortable DualShock design
- Pressure-sensitive analogue face buttons
- Works with original PlayStation games
Cons
- Wired only
- Sticks wear and lose tension
- Many low-quality fakes
The DualShock 2 shipped with every PlayStation 2, and it’s almost identical to the original DualShock. But a few clever changes made it a better controller.
Design and features
It looks like the original DualShock, but in black, with firmer sticks and, crucially, pressure-sensitive analogue face buttons. Games like Metal Gear Solid 2 and Gran Turismo used them for subtle control, from gently lowering a gun to modulating the throttle. It’s wired, with a long cable, and works with original PlayStation games too.
Buying one today
Genuine DualShock 2s are plentiful second-hand, but sticks wear over time, and many cheap fakes don’t support pressure-sensitive buttons properly.
Verdict
The DualShock 2 is a comfortable, reliable controller and the best way to play PS2 games. Buy genuine Sony pads and check the sticks before you buy.
