DualShock 4 Review: The Pad That Fixed PlayStation Controllers

8/10 — Sony DualShock 4 Wireless Controller
Works with: PS4, PS5 (PS4 games only), PC, Android, iOS
Pros
- Huge improvement on the DualShock 3
- Proper curved triggers and better sticks
- Touchpad, Share button and built-in speaker
- Works wirelessly with PC and phones
Cons
- Poor battery life
- Light bar drains power and reflects on screens
- Sticks' rubber wears and can drift
The DualShock 4, launched with the PS4 in 2013, was the biggest overhaul of Sony’s controller since analogue sticks arrived. It fixed most of the DualShock 3’s weaknesses and set the stage for the DualSense.
Design
It’s larger and more comfortable than older DualShocks, with proper curved triggers, concave sticks with more resistance, and a better D-pad. A clickable touchpad sits in the middle, alongside a Share button for screenshots and video, a built-in speaker and a headphone jack. The light bar on the front helps the PlayStation Camera track it.
A 2016 revision added a light strip on the touchpad and the ability to communicate over USB, which reduces latency when wired.
Weaknesses
Battery life is its weak point, with the light bar draining power. The rubber on the sticks wears over time.
Verdict
The DualShock 4 is a superb controller that transformed PlayStation pads. It works with PS4 games on PS5 and pairs easily with PCs and phones, making it a great budget controller today. Look for the later revision if you can.
