Mad Catz MLG Pro Circuit Controller Review: Modular Before It Was Cool

6.5/10 — Mad Catz MLG Pro Circuit Controller
Works with: Xbox 360, PS3
Pros
- Swappable stick and D-pad modules
- Adjustable weights
- Endorsed by Major League Gaming
Cons
- Wired only
- Mad Catz build quality was inconsistent
- Expensive at launch
The Mad Catz MLG Pro Circuit Controller, released in partnership with Major League Gaming, was one of the first mainstream modular controllers. It offered features that later became common on premium pads.
Design and features
Its biggest selling point was modularity. The left thumbstick and D-pad modules could be swapped, letting you choose an Xbox-style offset layout or a PlayStation-style symmetrical one. Weights could be added to change the feel. It was available for both Xbox 360 and PS3.
Verdict
The MLG Pro Circuit Controller was an interesting experiment, and its modular design was ahead of its time. But Mad Catz’s patchy build quality and its wired-only design held it back. It’s mainly one for collectors today.
