7/10 — Namco NeGcon
Works with: PlayStation, PS2
Pros
- Unique, precise analogue steering by twisting
- Analogue buttons for throttle and brake
- Brilliant with Ridge Racer and WipEout
Cons
- Only supported by a limited number of games
- Takes practice to master
- Collectible and getting pricey
The NeGcon is one of the strangest and most loved PlayStation controllers. Made by Namco, it was designed for Ridge Racer, and it lets you steer by twisting the controller itself.
Design and features
The two halves of the NeGcon are joined by a swivel joint in the middle. Twisting them gives smooth analogue steering, far more precise than a D-pad, and its analogue buttons control the throttle and brake. It was supported by Ridge Racer, WipEout and other racing games.
Verdict
The NeGcon is a brilliant, unique controller that racing fans still love. It’s only supported by some games and takes some getting used to, but it’s a must for PlayStation racing enthusiasts.
