PlayStation Move Review: Sony's Glowing Motion Wand

6.5/10 — Sony PlayStation Move Motion Controller
Works with: PS3, PS4, PS5 (PS VR games)
Pros
- Precise motion tracking
- Gave the original PS VR its hand controls
- Cheap second-hand
Cons
- Requires a PlayStation Camera or Eye
- Few great dedicated games
- Micro-USB charging and aging batteries
The PlayStation Move was Sony’s answer to the Nintendo Wii. Launched in 2010 for PS3, the glowing wand used the PlayStation Eye camera to track your hand movements with impressive precision.
Design and features
It’s a wand-shaped controller with a glowing ball on top, which the camera tracks, plus motion sensors inside. It has a big Move button, a trigger, and face buttons. On PS3, it powered games like Sports Champions and The Shoot, but its library never matched the Wii’s.
The Move got a second life with PlayStation VR on PS4, where it served as the system’s hand controllers for games like Beat Saber, and it can also be used with PS VR games on PS5.
Verdict
The PlayStation Move was precise but never had enough great games on PS3. Today, it’s mainly worth owning for the original PS VR.
