Xbox Controller S Review: The Pad That Saved the Xbox

Microsoft Xbox Controller S

7.5/10 — Microsoft Xbox Controller S

Works with: Xbox

Pros

  • Much smaller and more comfortable than the Duke
  • Laid the groundwork for the 360 pad
  • Pressure-sensitive face buttons
  • Two memory unit slots

Cons

  • Black and white buttons still awkwardly placed
  • D-pad is only average
  • Original units are aging

The Xbox Controller S was originally designed for Japan, where the giant Duke controller was considered far too big. It proved so popular that Microsoft made it the standard Xbox pad worldwide.

Design

It’s dramatically smaller than the Duke, with a more compact body and tighter button layout. The black and white buttons moved below the main face buttons, which was an improvement, though still not ideal. It kept the Duke’s pressure-sensitive face buttons and memory unit slots. In many ways, it’s a clear ancestor of the much-loved Xbox 360 pad.

Verdict

The Xbox Controller S is the best way to play the original Xbox. It’s comfortable and well suited to the console’s library, though worn sticks and buttons are common on second-hand pads, so check them before buying.
