Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 Review: Premium, With a Catch

Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2

8/10 — Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2

Works with: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC

Pros

  • Four rear paddles and adjustable trigger stops
  • Adjustable thumbstick tension
  • Built-in rechargeable battery with long life
  • Swappable sticks and D-pads, and a carry case

Cons

  • Very expensive
  • Well-documented reliability issues (bumpers, grips)
  • Heavier than the standard pad

The Xbox Elite Series 2 is Microsoft’s premium controller, and it’s packed with features that competitive players love. It’s also one of the most expensive first-party controllers around, and its durability has been a sore point for many owners.

Design and features

The Elite Series 2 keeps the classic Xbox shape but adds a rubberised grip, a weighty premium feel and a host of customisation options. There are four magnetic rear paddles, three-stage trigger locks for faster shots, and the tension of each thumbstick can be adjusted with the included tool. Swappable sticks and two D-pads come in a zipped case with a charging dock.

Unlike the standard pad, it has a built-in rechargeable battery, which lasts for a long time between charges, and connects over USB-C. Profiles can be customised through the Xbox Accessories app and switched with a button.

Reliability

The big caveat is durability. Many owners have reported failing bumpers, peeling rubber grips and stick drift, sometimes within months. Microsoft extended its warranty, but it’s something to bear in mind given the price. The cheaper Elite Series 2 Core edition ships with fewer accessories, which can be bought separately.

Verdict

The Xbox Elite Series 2 is a superb controller when it works, with customisation that few rivals match. But its high price and patchy reliability make it a gamble. Buy it from a retailer with a good returns policy, and keep your receipt.
