The dystopian world of RoboCop is getting a major reboot, thanks to Amazon MGM Studios, signaling a fresh push for the iconic franchise on television. Based on the classic 1987 film directed by Paul Verhoeven, this new series promises to delve into the timeless themes of technology, identity, and corporate control with renewed urgency.

The vision behind the project is already drawing some of the industry’s most celebrated names. Peter Ocko, known for his distinctive approach as Lodge 49, has been tapped as the showrunner, ensuring a bold and recognizable voice guides the narrative. Adding to the creative depth, James Wan, the director behind the chilling world of The Conjuring, will serve as one of the producers.

Wan expressed his excitement about the opportunity in a recent statement, noting that Verhoeven’s original 1987 creation was decades ahead of its time. He aims to honor that legacy while highlighting its contemporary relevance in our modern, tech-driven society. Working alongside co-creator Ed Neumeier at Amazon MGM Studios, the goal is to build something unmistakably new for a global audience.

The RoboCop brand has a rich history that stretches back further than just the 1987 cinematic debut. The property has bounced between various formats, including an animated series in 1988 and even a live-action run in 1994. After periods of dormancy, the franchise saw a revitalization with the 2014 remake starring Joel Kinnaman.

Beyond film and television, the legacy of RoboCop has found exciting new life in interactive gaming. Developer Teyon’s RoboCop: Rogue City reimagined Old Detroit with a surprisingly faithful eye to the source material. The game captivated players by focusing on detailed world-building, strategic downtime between missions, and satisfying gunplay that deserves recognition as a worthy successor to the original vision.

The gaming universe surrounding RoboCop continues to evolve. Following the initial release, Teyon released an expansion in 2025 that introduced mercenary action and flashbacks allowing players to experience the world through Alex Murphy’s eyes before his transformation. This commitment to expanding the lore shows a deep appetite for exploring the depths of this dystopian setting.

The creative momentum continues with future projects. Teyon is already gearing up for new adventures, including Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish, an action game set in the World of Darkness, slated for release in 2027. This continued focus on dynamic storytelling ensures that the spirit of RoboCop remains vibrant across all media.
