Rockstar boss: GTA 6 gun physics fail at this resolution
The wild freedom of the open world is about to get a little more realistic. In a significant update for GTA 6, players will no longer be able to treat the environment like a pure playground when wielding weapons. Rockstar North has introduced nuanced changes to how Non-Player Characters (NPCs) react to the presence of guns, pushing the game’s behavioral sophistication to a whole new level.
This shift is less about adding new mechanics and more about refining the world’s response to player actions. As glimpsed in extended looks, inhabitants of the world will now react realistically to the sight of a handgun or rifle. If you are seen gripping a weapon, the world won’t just ignore you; it will respond with caution, and in some cases, antagonism from law enforcement.
The decision behind this change comes from a focus on realism. Rob Nelson, the joint boss and development lead for the game, explained that the approach used in GTA 5 no longer aligns with the technological and behavioral expectations of 2026.
“We don’t feel that works any longer at this resolution with the behavioral sophistication we need from our population now,” Nelson stated. He pointed out that in the previous iteration, players could pull weapons from nowhere without consequence, which clashed with the increasingly believable world of GTA 6.
The new system emphasizes that carrying firearms is a visible action, fundamentally changing how players navigate their criminal lives. There is no more hiding military-grade weaponry in pockets; the world now demands that players acknowledge their possessions.
Nelson detailed the new rules for carrying weapons, noting that players can now carry two concealed handguns, but this changes the visual and behavioral feedback. The rules are specific: you can carry two long guns, but they must be visible on your back and in your hand. Attempting to conceal too much will result in noticeable, and often negative, reactions from NPCs.
The level of NPC nuance has also been significantly heightened. Simply having a long gun on your back might be acceptable, but having one in hand immediately elicits a response. People will react to you if you are rolling around with visible weapons, leading them to move away or take defensive action.
This evolution ensures that the game world feels less like a sandbox and more like a living, breathing environment where every action has a consequence. It’s a move designed to deepen immersion, ensuring that the criminal landscape of GTA 6 feels genuinely dangerous and reactive.
