The world of game development is getting a serious dose of real life, as Rockstar Games has embarked on an ambitious project to build the sprawling world of Grand Theft Auto 6, not just in code, but with real-world creativity. The studio has dramatically expanded its team and brought in actual professionals to inject unprecedented depth and authenticity into Vice City.

Following the success of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar Games has doubled its employee headcount to tackle the mammoth task of bringing GTA 6 to life. This expansion is reflected in the creation of a new Los Angeles-based office, a hub almost solely dedicated to developing the game’s Non-Player Characters, ensuring that every corner of the map feels lived-in and genuine.

But the expansion goes far beyond traditional game development. Rockstar is actively constructing a comprehensive fashion ecosystem for Vice City. To capture the diverse styles, class, and culture necessary to define the city’s residents, the studio hired real-world professionals. For instance, Miami-based stylist Jillian Carr was brought on board to help shape the visual identity of the game.

Carr’s insight captures the essence of the environment she is helping to craft: “Vice City is built around vanity,” she explained. “Between social media, celebrity culture and a constant flow of tourists, appearances carry significant weight, and trend cycles turn over quickly.” This approach ensures that the game’s aesthetic reflects the fast-paced, superficial glamour of the era.

This commitment to real-world input isn’t limited to fashion. The development team has also brought in specialized talent to handle complex elements of the game’s mechanics. Racecar drivers have joined the team to ensure realistic vehicle handling, while fifty real street artists have been commissioned to design the dynamic murals that will adorn the game’s map.

Beyond aesthetics, Rockstar is pushing the boundaries of gameplay itself. New details for GTA 6 introduce mechanics that tie character development directly to real-world actions. Players will now find that activities like eating, working out, and sleeping all have tangible impacts on their characters and the game world, deepening the simulation of life in Vice City.

As the anticipation for the title grows, Rockstar is ready to pull back the curtain further. The studio is set to release an extended look on Netflix, which promises to offer an in-depth exploration of the game’s expanded gameplay and world.
