The video game landscape is undergoing a massive transformation, driven by shifting consumer habits and astronomical console prices. As we look toward 2026 and beyond, major industry players are grappling with the future of physical media, the cost of hardware, and the surprising role of artificial intelligence.

One of the most seismic shifts is happening with Sony, which has announced its intention to end support for physical PlayStation game discs in 2028. This move has sparked widespread reaction, highlighting a growing preference for the convenience and accessibility of digital gaming. As Tim Willits, Chief Creative Officer at Saber Interactive, noted, many players are understandably upset by this change, having recently found themselves enjoying the streamlined experience of digital distribution.

Despite the pivot to digital, the physical market remains potent. While the trend leans heavily digital, Sony continues to sell millions of physical game discs annually. Willits observed that this dichotomy is stark, noting that the sales trends differ significantly between North America and Europe, pointing to regional market variations.

The economic reality of gaming has also become a thorny issue. Video game consoles have become significantly more expensive than ever. This inflation is fueled by a complex mix of factors, including economic pressures, tariffs, and the escalating cost of components and memory necessary for next-generation systems.

Major players like Sony and Microsoft have implemented price increases on their consoles, making the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S substantially more costly than at launch in 2020. Meanwhile, Nintendo is also hiking the price of its Switch 2, adding another layer of financial strain on consumers.

Experts suggest that this trend is deeply worrying. Ampere Analysis reports that if next-generation consoles eventually reach prices of $1,000 or more, it could have a dramatic, negative effect on the overall gaming market.

Amidst these financial pressures, a truly imaginative idea has surfaced in the gaming community. Willits pondered the future of physical media packaging, suggesting a possibility for an “AI box” where players could upload and manage all their games in a centralized digital format, turning physical collecting into a conceptual exercise.

On the development side, the role of artificial intelligence is also evolving. Saber Interactive is pushing the envelope in how they approach game creation, aiming for a future where AI assists in development. The company maintains a firm philosophy regarding this integration, asserting that they will never fire anyone and replace them with AI, positioning AI as a tool rather than a replacement for human creativity.
