See Combat in Action Our Fable Hands-on Guide

Xbox

The world of Fable is getting ready to kick off a legendary adventure, and the latest glimpse into its combat mechanics has proven that the classic fantasy formula is ready for a spectacular evolution. At gamescom 2026, Playground Games unveiled a first-ever demo of the game’s combat system, allowing press and creators to dive into how the core strengths of the original trilogy translate into dynamic, player-driven action.

Titled Mud and Death, the demo throws players into a haunted mine filled with ghosts and skeletons, providing the perfect crucible to test out the game’s diverse arsenal. Here, the Hero must master a blend of physical prowess, magical might, and tactical positioning to survive.

The heart of the demo lies in the dynamic interaction between melee, ranged, and magic. The system honors the classic “Strength, Skill, and Will” framework, but it allows for radical personalization. Players can seamlessly switch between combat styles, equipping different weapons and skills to radically alter their approach to battle.

Taking the melee option, the Hero can wield powerful tools like the two-handed Bower Hammer. This weapon rewards powerful swings and charge attacks that send the Hero spinning across the floor, making close-quarters combat energetic and full of flair. Furthermore, the system rewards tactical finesse; parrying attacks can send armored skeletons staggering, opening them up for devastating counter-strikes.

The magical side of the combat is just as varied. The spell menu offers options that dramatically shift gameplay. Players can deploy effects like Fireball for quick bursts, Lightning to chain damage across enemies, or the utility-focused Lift spell, which lets players manipulate groups of foes mid-air. Even the delightfully whimsical Befowl spell allows players to turn targets into harmless chickens, adding a uniquely Fable twist to the fray.

Ranged combat offers equally compelling choices. Whether equipping the accurate Deepwood Bow for precise skeleton takedowns or the high-speed Repeater Crossbow for rapid-fire bursts, players can choose tools that specialize in different threats. These ranged attacks are designed to target weakspots, turning simple shots into tactical advantages against even flying, armored foes like the Lantern Keeper.

The real magic happens when these elements are combined. The combat system is designed for intuitive synergy, allowing players to weave together a spell to group enemies, use a ranged attack to stagger a threat, and finish with a precise melee strike. There are no clunky menus or confusing loadout bars—just clear abilities that let players maximize their potential.

Fights in Albion are not just about dodging; they are about managing chaos. Players face a diverse array of foes, including the numerous Hollow Folk (skeletons in various armor states), the elusive Wraiths (fast-moving ghosts that spawn more enemies), and the formidable, flying Lantern Keeper mini-bosses. This ensures that players must constantly be quick on their toes, managing large, dynamic groups of enemies that are constantly spawning and reacting to their actions.

This first look at Fable combat is a tantalizing promise—a system built on deep choice, immediate impact, and the sheer joy of overcoming formidable foes. With the game arriving in February 2027, players are already anticipating the full scope of adventure waiting in the living world of Albion.

The game arrives on February 23, 2027, with early access for the Premium Edition starting February 18. It will be available on XBOX Series X|S, XBOX on PC, cloud, and included with Game Pass, with the option to play on both console and PC at no additional cost via XBOX Play Anywhere.
