Shamans and Warlocks can’t tank in WoW but that could change
The Evolution of Azeroth: How World of Warcraft is Redefining Classic Gameplay
World of Warcraft is undergoing a significant transformation as it moves toward WoW: Forever, promising exciting new directions for the classic sandbox experience. This evolution isn’t just about cosmetic changes; it’s about fundamentally rethinking class roles and gameplay mechanics, pushing the boundaries of what players expect from the legendary world of Azeroth.
To tackle long-standing issues within the classic framework, Blizzard has been experimenting with innovative class mechanics. During previous expansions, features like introducing new roles—such as a Rogue tank or a Mage healer—were tested. These experiments helped solve persistent problems, allowing more classes to effectively hold aggro and manage combat, demonstrating a clear commitment to balancing the game for a broader player base.
The design philosophy behind these shifts is rooted in careful learning. Senior game designer Josh Greenfield has emphasized that while the team absorbed many lessons from these experimental seasons, they intentionally dialed back some of the more radical concepts. The goal is to ensure that the core identity of each class remains deeply coded and original-WoW-centric, even as the gameplay gets more dynamic.
Greenfield noted that while the spirit of the learning is carried forward, changes that were truly outside the original WoW framework, like making a Warlock a tank, were toned down. The focus remains on providing meaningful gameplay changes and exciting new ways to play, rather than simply introducing entirely new archetypes.
This focus on balance is visible in the current state of play. For example, the Shaman class is currently on the cusp of becoming a viable tank, though it still requires further development in areas like improved taunt mechanics and better damage mitigation. This signals that the path for class evolution is ongoing and iterative.
In terms of content, the new experience brings back some beloved elements from previous seasons. Players can expect to find certain experimental content, such as new class quests, the Undermine Reals endgame currency, and even cozy, hidden quest chains. However, it is important to note that larger, exclusive raids and dungeons, like the Scarlet Enclave raid and the Kharazan Crypts dungeon, will not be included at launch.
WoW: Forever is positioned as a major swing for the franchise, demonstrating Blizzard‘s commitment to innovation. Hands-on sessions, including gameplay demonstrations at BlizzCon 2026 and unique experiences like playing the game on a controller, have showcased the potential for this classic vision to become a major game-changer for the MMORPG genre.
The beta phase for WoW: Forever is currently underway for players who have preordered the new Skyborne elf race. With the full release set for November 4, the stage is being set for a truly evolved and engaging experience of Azeroth.
