The Legend of Nintendo: Shigeru Miyamoto Receives Japan’s Highest Cultural Honor

Shigeru Miyamoto, the visionary mastermind behind global gaming icons like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Donkey Kong, is set to receive one of Japan’s most prestigious cultural accolades—and a historic distinction: he is the first video game developer to earn the Order of Culture.

Established in 1937, the Order of Culture recognizes individuals who have made substantial contributions to Japan’s art, literature, science, and technology. This esteemed recognition is now being extended to Miyamoto, acknowledging the monumental influence his creations have had across various fields.

When asked about the honor, Miyamoto remained notably modest. He emphasized that the achievement is not solely his own, attributing the success of his vast body of work to the incredible collaboration of many talented individuals he worked alongside throughout his remarkable 49-year career. “I am truly honored to receive such a prestigious award,” he stated, adding that he accepts the honor on behalf of those who contributed to his journey.

The award ceremony will take place on Japan’s Culture Day, November 3rd, where Miyamoto, the Nintendo representative director and executive fellow, will be joined by seven other distinguished recipients chosen by the Japanese government. This recognition serves as a powerful testament to the legacy of his franchises, tracing their influence from the classic arcade machines of the 1980s right up to today’s portable home consoles.

Miyamoto’s impact stretches across generations of players and technologies. Whether it was the foundational designs of classic games or the continued evolution of modern gaming, his influence is undeniable. His work continues to inspire exciting new developments, including upcoming titles and remakes that keep the spirit of innovation alive.

From the enduring magic of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake to the anticipation surrounding new console generations, Miyamoto’s legacy remains a powerful force. It is an honor that rightly celebrates a lifetime spent crafting worlds that continue to captivate millions worldwide.
