The popularity of a class often reveals more than just playtime; it speaks to the core mechanics and appeal of a game. With the release of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, publisher Focus Entertainment has provided a fascinating snapshot of player engagement, especially within the demanding PvE operations.

To coincide with the game’s two-year anniversary, Focus Entertainment revealed the most picked classes over the last year. The results paint a clear picture of which archetypes players gravitate toward in the massive, chaotic battles of the Imperium.

At the top of the list, the Tactical class emerged as the undisputed favorite, selected 44.4 million times for PvE operations. This dominance was closely followed by Bulwark, which tallied 40.1 million selections, demonstrating the appeal of classes focused on resilience and group survival. The remaining positions were filled by Assault (33.3 million times picked), Heavy (30.4 million times picked), Vanguard (27.4 million times picked), and Techmarine (22.3 million times picked).

Interestingly, the seemingly powerful Sniper class, known for its ability to cloak and deliver ranged damage, ranked sixth with 20 million picks. This placement raises an intriguing question about the balance of play. While the Sniper offers potent single-target damage, its perceived lower popularity compared to other classes suggests a specific dynamic within the game’s high-level PvE environment.

The reason Tactical leads the pack lies in its unique access to powerful combat tools. Tactical players benefit from access to melta weapons and the formidable Pyreblaster primary weapon. More crucially, the class’s signature ability, the Auspex Scan, is considered a game-changing mechanic, allowing players to reveal and heavily debuff enemies in a targeted area—a necessity for success on higher difficulty levels.

Bulwark’s high ranking is also well-earned, as the class fundamentally shifts the dynamic of group encounters by offering crucial recovery and healing abilities that keep the entire squad alive.

While there are clear statistical winners, the game successfully makes every class viable at most difficulty levels. The core enjoyment of Space Marine 2 comes from experimentation and combining abilities, allowing players to find unique strategies across the board.

Looking ahead, the development team continues to refine the experience. The roadmap for Space Marine 2 includes the introduction of the Apothecary class, slated for early 2027. This new addition promises to further diversify the strategic options available to players.

Meanwhile, the narrative focus remains on the relentless nature of the conflict. The developer, Saber, has acknowledged the intense difficulty of engaging the Chaos forces, noting that these enemies present a greater challenge than the Tyranids, and has confirmed plans to introduce changes to this aspect of the game.
