Smash Ultimate Update Failed Expectations
In the fast-evolving world of Nintendo gaming, where the Switch 2 is sparking intense excitement, there’s a stark contrast in development priorities. While other titles are leaping forward with massive hardware enhancements, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has received a recent patch that, while technically necessary, offered no glimpse into the future of the hardware.
The Ver. 13.0.5 update focused primarily on backend stability, addressing issues related to “invalid data” sent or received during online battles. This fix smooths out the experience for players engaged in competitive play, ensuring that the chaos of Smash remains fun and free of technical hiccups.
However, for the dedicated Smash fanbase, this update felt like a brief pause rather than a launchpad. Unlike fellow Switch 1 titles, which were immediately blessed with major feature rollouts—such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s enhanced split-screen support for up to eight players and camera options, or Pikmin 3 Deluxe’s similar Switch 2 updates—Ultimate remained largely untouched by the new console’s potential.
This lack of integration has left many fans wishing for a significant evolution of the beloved fighting game. There is a growing list of features players are eager to see in a Switch 2 version of Ultimate, including new characters, additional stages, increased resolution, and the implementation of rollback netcode.
The reality is that major content development for the series concluded in 2021, following the addition of Sora from Kingdom Hearts, which capped off the game’s DLC. The latest entry from creator Masahiro Sakurai, Kirby Air Riders, launched without any planned expansions, leaving the door open for the community to dream of a fresh start.
Perhaps the most compelling thought for the community is that while technical fixes are important, the true prize lies in seeing a full Smash Bros. Ultimate Switch 2 upgrade. Fans are hoping for a major overhaul that finally brings the series into the modern era, moving beyond simple bug fixes and embracing the exciting possibilities of next-generation gameplay.
