Solid Snake wants to make another game

Eleven years. That is the span of time that has passed since the mainline entry of the Metal Gear Solid saga, Metal Gear Solid 5, finally landed on the shelves on September 1, 2015. An eleven-year gap, and the franchise continues to maintain its legendary status, yet the rhythm of development has been anything but consistent.

The quiet period following the release of MGSV was defined by significant shifts within the creative leadership. Hideo Kojima made the pivotal choice to step away from the studio environment to establish his own entity, Kojima Productions. While this move was a defining chapter for Kojima, it introduced a period of relative silence to the main continuity.

When a post-Kojima title eventually emerged, it was Survive. This game aimed to bridge the gap, offering new content for the dedicated fanbase. However, the reception for this attempt at continuity was decidedly mixed. Instead of basking in the glow of a successful continuation, Survive was unfortunately labeled one of the worst games of 2018.

It is a poignant reminder that even the most iconic franchises face the inevitable challenges of evolution and continuity. The journey of Metal Gear Solid is a testament to ambitious storytelling, but the decades-long hiatuses and shifting creative landscapes illustrate that even masterpieces occasionally struggle to maintain momentum in the modern gaming era.
