Sombra becomes support, Roadhog is reworked, and new Doctrine arrives in OW S5
The world of competitive hero shooters is buzzing, and the recent BlizzCon 2026 event delivered a tidal wave of exciting changes for the reigning champion, Overwatch. Developers have unveiled a host of major hero adjustments for the upcoming Season 5, promising a shake-up that will redefine the meta and bring some much-needed balance to the roster.
Leading the charge in these transformations is the brand-new addition: Doctrine, the enigmatic “cool vampire” hero. Game director Aaron Keller introduced him with an animated trailer showcasing his dramatic abilities, including the capacity to heal and dish out damage with a sceptre, move through darkness, and utilize drones to buff his allies. With mechanized bats adding to his arsenal, Doctrine is set to bring a completely new dynamic to the team.
Fans have been eager to see how this spectral addition will fit into the fray, and the developer made sure players could get a taste of the action. Attendees at BlizzCon could experience Doctrine on the show floor, while players at home can already access his Hero Trial in-game, which will remain live through September 14th. This gives players plenty of time to familiarize themselves before he officially joins the roster next month.
Beyond the fresh blood, the developers tackled some of the most hotly debated heroes, promising meaningful adjustments to the existing lineup. The imposing tank, Roadhog, is finally getting the respect he deserves. The developers confirmed that his signature hook and one-shot kill combo will be retired, allowing the chunky tank to evolve into a hero who can offer more meaningful assistance to his team.
Perhaps the most surprising development, however, involves the often-elusive hacker, Sombra. In a move that flips the script on class dynamics, Sombra will be shifting from a pure DPS role to a versatile support hero starting next season. While the exact skill kits for both Doctrine and Sombra are still under wraps, the changes signal a deep commitment to evolving the gameplay experience in Overwatch.
