Sony skips CES missing PlayStation’s silliest announcements
Sony is taking a significant pivot away from the traditional technology showcase, opting out of the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2027. This move signals a strategic shift, prioritizing entertainment and communications over the pure technology focus that defines the show.
The decision comes after a strategic evaluation of how the company manages its “events and communications based on the needs and priorities of our diverse business.” Consequently, Sony will no longer be presenting direct PlayStation news at the showcase.
While CES remains the epicenter for hardware reveals, Sony is choosing to channel its attention toward broader entertainment categories—games, anime, films, and music—areas where the company can maximize its impact.
Historically, Sony has maintained a long-standing presence at CES, attending every edition since the event debuted in 1967. Though the company has always utilized the platform for executive keynotes, PlayStation has rarely been the central focus of these technology showcases.
However, when PlayStation did make an appearance, it often delivered moments that captivated the fanbase. For example, in 2020, then-PlayStation boss Jim Ryan unveiled the PS5 logo, an event that generated massive anticipation, even if the juicier details about release dates and specifications were deliberately saved for later events.
Later appearances have showcased transmedia adaptations, such as the announcements for the Horizon and Helldivers movies, and groundbreaking hardware like the PlayStation VR2 and accompanying titles. These reveals have successfully blended gaming with cinematic storytelling, demonstrating Sony’s capacity to create immersive worlds.
While other industry giants also utilize CES for big reveals, their approaches vary. Microsoft famously used the stage in 2001 to introduce the original Xbox alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, yet the platform did not always dominate the technology focus. Meanwhile, Nintendo’s history includes an early entry, unveiling the Advanced Video System as a prototype in 1984.
The shift represents a change in how Sony chooses to communicate its products. By focusing internally on entertainment narratives, the company can ensure that its major announcements are met with the dedicated attention they deserve, rather than being lost in the noise of a general technology show.
CES 2027 is set to take place from January 6-9 in Las Vegas, marking another year where the industry gathers, even if Sony is choosing a different path for its next big presentation.
