Spider-Man’s unexpected Batman inspiration

It must be a strange, wonderful journey to be Spider-Man, right? Behind the mask, Peter Parker’s life in Spider-Man: Brand New Day was anything but easy—a tapestry woven with isolation, profound grief, and the constant threat of a world determined to see him dead.

This deeply emotional throughline, which defines the character’s experience, was born from a surprisingly lighthearted source. Tom Holland, the actor bringing Peter Parker to life, admitted that the inspiration came from a joke found in the 2017 film The LEGO Batman Movie.

Holland revealed that the contrast between the glamorous world of superheroes and the crushing reality of personal loneliness was key. He pointed to a specific scene in the LEGO movie where Batman, after a successful night of crimefighting, retreats home to find a profoundly sad scene: a plate of microwaved lobster thermidor and a lonely rewatch of Jerry Maguire.

“Sending that into the creative process felt like a great little thing,” Holland shared. “It creates so many layers. It makes the audience yearn for Peter Parker to find happiness and peace and love.”

This focus on internal struggle over external action proved to be a powerful artistic choice, reinforcing Holland’s keen instincts for the character. Earlier in the development process, Holland even mentioned that he had once “hated” a particular cut based on test screening feedback, demonstrating how pivotal moments in filmmaking can be altered in the edit room. He noted that even when aiming for what the audience requested, filmmakers learn that a movie can evolve in countless ways during production.

The blend of personal stakes and high-octane action paid off handsomely. Aided by the palpable energy of Spider-Man’s Spider-Sense, Spider-Man: Brand New Day soared to become the highest-grossing movie of all time in the United States.

Now, the story continues. Plans are underway for a re-release, with the intention of bringing back deleted scenes and adding them to the final cut, further deepening the experience for audiences.
