Star Mystique reveals ownership of her character in Avengers Doomsday
The upcoming Avengers film, Avengers: Doomsday, is shaping up to be a veritable reunion for Marvel fans, boasting a supersized cast that includes some of the most iconic returning stars.
Among the returning faces are legends like Ian McKellen as Magneto, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, and Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler. But perhaps the most fascinating story unfolding behind the scenes concerns Rebecca Romijn, who steps back into her iconic role as Mystique.
When discussing the transformation involved in the film, Romijn shared that this particular take on the character involved a delightfully different approach to the makeup process. It wasn’t just about applying paint; it was an experience that redefined her understanding of inhabiting a character.
“First of all, it was a call that I was not expecting at all,” she explained. “And my very first question was: ‘Let’s talk about the makeup process.’ It was a slightly different take in Inverse.”
The sheer complexity of the look required an incredible amount of dedication. Romijn recalled that the makeup alone took a full nine hours to execute perfectly, which made the process challenging but ultimately rewarding.
She reflected on her initial feelings about the role, noting that when she first tried it, she struggled with impostor syndrome—a feeling of not deserving the role. But returning for this project, she approached the transformation with a sense of ownership that felt truly delightful.
To achieve the seamless, lifelike effect of Mystique, the commitment was intense. She described working grueling hours, sometimes up to twenty-four straight hours, requiring breaks just so her skin could breathe under the elaborate prosthetics. This extreme physical demand meant dealing with blistering underneath the costume and needing constant care with healing salves.
Despite the physical toll, Romijn insisted the experience was worth every minute spent. She declared that the resulting costume was the most beautiful she had ever seen, a breathtaking masterpiece that helped her enter the perfect headspace to fully embody the character.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in December, promising an event that blends cinematic spectacle with a truly unforgettable transformation.
