Star Wars names the Light and Dark sides of the Force
Star Wars is constantly evolving, and lately, the galaxy has delivered some fascinating linguistic shifts that deepen the lore and bring the mythos into sharper focus. One of the most intriguing recent developments involves a fresh way of naming the Force itself, a concept introduced through the narrative of the Fall of Kylo Ren.
This new terminology stems from the comic series by Charles Soule and Will Sliney, which offers a creative framework for understanding the duality of the Force. Previously, the narrative established that the Dark Side was known as The Shadow, while the Light Side was termed The Shine. This simple yet evocative renaming subtly reframes the cosmic struggle, suggesting a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the power players in the Star Wars universe.
The introduction of these terms isn’t just a naming convention; it subtly impacts how we perceive the conflict. Further deepening this new lexicon, the character Tava Ren, who led the Knights of Ren, was noted to refer to potential Force-sensitive individuals as radiant, hinting at an awareness of the Force that permeates the galaxy.
While these details may seem minor, they contribute significantly to making the Star Wars galaxy feel much larger and more intricately lived-in. The universe continues to expand, weaving these sophisticated layers of history and terminology into the fabric of its world.
Meanwhile, the focus shifts to forthcoming narratives that promise to expand this understanding of the Force even further. Ahsoka Season 2 is set to arrive on January 20th, and it is poised to deliver new insights through the integration of the Mortis gods and the concept of the World Between Worlds.
This focus on divine archetypes ties directly back to the core themes of power and choice. Director Dave Filoni has previously spoken about the creation of the Mortis gods, noting that the entire endeavor explored the fundamental questions of power: “What were we examining there in Clone Wars? What was the metaphor? A lot of it is about power, and what you do with power, and how you wield power.” He suggested that for a Jedi, exploring these questions is a natural path.
As the series moves forward, the melding of deep lore, innovative terminology, and powerful mythological figures promises to continue enriching the Star Wars experience, ensuring that the Force remains an endlessly fascinating and unfolding mystery.
