In the ongoing landscape of gaming, where studio shifts and corporate reorganizations are redefining the industry, the developers behind State of Decay 3 have secured a promising future. Undead Labs, the creative force behind the survival game, has reached an agreement with a new publisher, ensuring the game remains on the map and poised for release.

This transition is particularly significant because it solidifies the studio’s status as a completely independent, employee-owned entity. Undead Labs recently confirmed their journey to full autonomy, signaling a fresh chapter for game development.

Philip Holt, Studio Head of Undead Labs, expressed sincere gratitude for the years spent collaborating with Microsoft, acknowledging the foundational role the relationship played in bringing the State of Decay story to life. Despite the changes, the team remains proud of the accomplishments they have achieved together.

This move by Undead Labs is part of a broader restructuring sweeping across Microsoft Game Studios. In recent months, the publishing arm has overseen a significant realignment, with several studios transitioning under new stewardship. This sweeping change has seen titles like Halo moving under the guidance of Activision, and other major players like Rare and its title, Sea of Thieves, also adjusting their affiliations.

Other studios have also found new homes; Obsidian, which is working on a new Fallout title, now reports to Bethesda. Furthermore, the future of the Forza franchise involves a merger of Playground Games and Turn 10.

This significant reorganization underscores the dynamic nature of the gaming ecosystem, demonstrating how ownership and partnership are being redefined. For Undead Labs, the focus now shifts to harnessing this independence to continue developing and refining State of Decay 3, with Microsoft confirming that the game is still slated to launch on Xbox Game Pass day-one when it is ready.
