Steam games might need age verification under EU Kids Act draft

The digital playground is constantly evolving, offering new worlds, sophisticated AI chatbots, and immersive online video games. But as these platforms grow, a crucial question arises: how do we ensure that children and young teens are protected while navigating this increasingly complex online landscape?

In response to these evolving digital concerns, the European Commission has put forward a significant proposal aimed at establishing new rules for online access. This draft legislation, known as the EU Kids Act, seeks to implement a tiered system designed to govern how minors under the age of fifteen can access various online services, including social media, AI tools, and video games.

The core of the proposal rests on the principle of safety, mandating stricter oversight for these digital spaces. A key component of the plan is the introduction of mandatory age verification for all users, creating a framework intended to safeguard younger users from potentially harmful content or interactions.

However, translating this vision into concrete rules requires defining what exactly falls under the scope of these new regulations. One of the most complex challenges lies in defining what constitutes an “online game.”

The proposal suggests that single-player games that rely on external online platforms, such as Steam, for essential functions like updates, distribution, or even a one-time authentication, could fall under the new scrutiny. This ambiguity highlights the fine line between supervised digital freedom and necessary age-appropriate protection.

If the definitions used by the law are not sufficiently tightened before the legislation is finalized, it raises the possibility that even traditionally single-player experiences could be subject to mandatory age verification.

This development signals a serious effort to harmonize digital safety across the EU, balancing innovation with the essential need for child protection in the rapidly expanding world of interactive entertainment and online interaction.
