The world of gaming is buzzing with crossover potential, and when titans of the industry start talking, you know something special is happening. Recently, Shift Up’s boss, Hyung-tae Kim, laid down a bold vision, expressing a deep desire to reunite with the legendary developers of PlatinumGames for another epic collaboration.

This interest came to light during a recent wide-ranging interview with PlatinumGames CEO Atsushi Inaba. The conversation quickly turned from character skins to the broader philosophy of game development, setting the stage for a fascinating look at what makes a truly great game.

Inaba, who has been instrumental in shaping some of gaming’s most celebrated titles, views the upcoming Stellar Blade as more than just a game; he sees it as a true model for game development. He praised the variety of enjoyable features and elements beyond the core action, suggesting that Stellar Blade sets a new benchmark for fun and engagement.

The connection between these studios is clearly deep. Inaba’s extensive experience spans critically acclaimed franchises like Bayonetta, Astral Chain, Nier: Automata, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, giving him a unique perspective on the technical and artistic achievements involved in creating stunning interactive worlds.

This respect for artistry extends to the talent involved. Kim, meanwhile, confessed his admiration for the Bayonetta series, listing it among his top three games. He expressed a hopeful ambition, jokingly suggesting he might even help design characters for future installments of the series if given the chance.

The potential for synergy proved real. The partnership between Shift Up and PlatinumGames has already delivered some exciting results, most notably through a series of Bayonetta-themed skins set to appear in Stellar Blade on the day of the game’s anticipated Switch 2 launch. These skins are available to all platforms for free, including an original design spearheaded by Kim himself, which Inaba noted exceeded expectations.

The enthusiasm for physical media and quality development is further underscored by Shift Up’s commitment to the technology behind the new titles, emphasizing that Stellar Blade is 100% on cartridge for the Switch 2, recognizing the importance of physical media in the gaming experience.
