As November approaches, the gaming world celebrates the sixth anniversary of the PlayStation 5 console. But while the hardware marks a milestone, the journey since its launch has been less about chasing volume and more about a fascinating shift in business strategy. The landscape of the console market has evolved dramatically, marking a transition from a hardware sales race to a focus on sustained, recurring revenue.

The era of perpetually cheaper consoles is over. Unlike earlier generations, where prices consistently dropped, the PS5 has held its value, and in fact, costs more today than they did in 2020. This shift signals that Sony is no longer prioritizing aggressive sales of the console itself. Instead, the focus is squarely on monetizing the immense audience that already owns the system.

Company president and CEO Hiroki Totoki has openly embraced this pivot, stating that the company is now in the latter half of the PS console’s lifetime cycle. Rather than attempting to aggressively push unit sales, the strategy is centered on recurring revenue from the existing user base. This focus is heavily anchored by PlayStation Plus, which currently boasts over 125 million monthly active users, providing a powerful foundation for ongoing monetization.

This monetization strategy is designed to maximize the value derived from the community. PlayStation Plus grants access to online services for a vast library of games, and higher subscription tiers entice users with access to expanded catalogs, turning ownership into continuous engagement.

Parallel to the subscription model, Sony is cementing its commitment to an all-digital future. The company is actively phasing out physical disc production, with plans to cease manufacturing discs starting in 2028. This move is anticipated to create a significant financial windfall, as it eliminates production costs and leverages the digital storefront, which already accounts for over 80% of games purchased on the console.

By transitioning to a purely digital ecosystem, Sony is poised to realize substantial profit increases. This strategic move, while facing some community resistance regarding the desire for physical media, is fundamentally about maximizing profitability and control over the gaming experience.

Looking at the sales figures, the PS5 has sold 95.3 million units as of July 31, 2026. Despite this massive milestone, the market environment remains challenging; console sales declined by 36% in the last quarter compared to 2025. However, the digital shift has proven successful. Digital game sales have climbed from 78% to 82% during the recent financial quarter, demonstrating that the future of console gaming is undeniably in the digital realm.
