Stranger Than Heaven Studio’s AI-free Tupac resurrection
The game world of Stranger Than Heaven is doing more than just exploring the past; it’s challenging some of the established norms of video game casting by bringing a legendary figure back to life. RGG Studio’s decision to resurrect the late rapper Tupac Shakur as a central character was certainly a move that sparked conversation, but the developers have firmly positioned the project as a celebration of legacy, ensuring the process was handled with meticulous care.
When the news first broke at Summer Game Fest, the integration of such a high-profile figure into a game generated a flurry of reactions. However, as more details emerged, the focus shifted to the ethical framework behind the character creation. RGG Studio was quick to clarify that the process adhered to the highest standards of respect for the legacy, explicitly confirming that no artificial intelligence technology was involved in crafting the likeness or design.
“RGG Studio is treating this integration with the utmost respect for his legacy, crafting every aspect in close collaboration and without the use of AI, including his character design based on archival footage and photographs,” the studio head stated. This commitment to traditional, human-led methods underscored the creative integrity of the project.
The figure who embodies this new era is Amaru, a character inspired by Tupac, who serves as the globe-trotting merchant Orpheus. As Orpheus, he possesses an “open mind” regarding the legality of his wares, guiding the protagonist Daito through the harsh realities awaiting him on his journey to 1915 Japan.
This is not an isolated effort. The game is a tapestry woven with a truly diverse and talented international ensemble. The cast features a stellar collection of performers from across the globe, including musicians Tori Kelly and Satoshi Fujihara, renowned Shogun actor Tokuma Nishioka, and the celebrated voice actor Akio Otsuka, among many others. Players will encounter this rich tapestry throughout the 50 years of history that the game chronicles.
