Studio layoffs just before hit Star Wars game launch
The launch of Star Wars Zero Company was hailed as a critical success, quickly becoming a Steam bestseller and earning high praise for its tactical gameplay and cinematic vision. However, behind the glossy success of the game lies a much murkier story involving the studio that created it, Bit Reactor.
Despite the accolades the game received, the celebratory atmosphere has been overshadowed by reports concerning the studio’s internal operations. Just before the game hit the market, Bit Reactor made the difficult decision to furlough the majority of its staff, leaving lingering questions about how a critically acclaimed project was brought to fruition.
This internal turmoil came to light through recent reports, including comments made by former employee Zachariah Scott. Scott alleged that the company was actively concealing the fact that the team had been placed on leave weeks prior, creating a stark contrast with public statements made by CEO Greg Foertsch, who was actively discussing future game developments at industry events.
While Bit Reactor has since confirmed that many of its staff are indeed on furlough, the exact numbers remain unclear. The prevailing suggestion is that approximately 80% of the studio personnel are currently on leave without pay. This move is widely believed to be linked to financial pressures, as the company reportedly ran out of money to pay employees shortly before launch, pushing for cost-cutting measures and a policy of austerity.
The financial pressures and internal disagreements escalated into a messy legal dispute between Bit Reactor’s former Chief Operating Officer, Alison Kelly, and CEO Foertsch. Kelly, another company co-founder, has publicly alleged that she was pushed out of the company by Foertsch and left without receiving compensation for her stake.
Foertsch has strongly denied these claims and has initiated a counter-suit, with a trial set to begin in early 2027. This ongoing legal battle adds a layer of complexity to the narrative surrounding the studio’s history.
Adding intrigue to the background is a claim regarding the genesis of the project itself. It is suggested that Zero Company originated from Kelly, who presented the idea to then-executive Zince Zampella. Zampella had initially considered the concept for a Titanfall spinoff before suggesting a pivot to the Star Wars license.
Despite the game’s success, the future of Bit Reactor and its team remains uncertain. The studio has not offered any public commentary on the commercial performance required to reinstate its staff, leaving fans and observers to wonder if the success of Star Wars Zero Company is enough to heal the internal fractures.
